Making a Glass Humming Bird Feeder
![]() |
If you look in the world today, you will discover that there are many different species of humming birds you can find. They have names like Berylline, Buff-bellied, Broad-tailed, Magnificent, Xantus, Allen's, and Anna's. Probably the most popular and recognizable species of humming bird is the Ruby-throated species. If you're interested in attracting these miniscule birds to your garden, try making a glass humming bird feeder.
You will need only a few simple materials to make one of these feeders. A glass bottle, crafting wire, hot glue, and a shepherd's hook for hanging is all that's required. When choosing a glass bottle, make sure the opening is large enough for the birds to get their beaks in for feeding. And if you can find one, choose a red bottle. This is because humming birds are highly attracted to bright colors, especially red. You can often find colored glass bottles in a variety of shapes and sizes at your local craft store.
To craft your feeder, wrap some crafting wire around the neck of the bottle and secure with hot glue if you wish. To hang the feeder, simply wrap the wire around the hook. A shepherd's hook simply stakes into the ground and is often used to hang bird feeders or decorative flags. These hooks are plentiful at any garden center or home improvement store. If you want to hang your feeder from a tree branch, that's fine. Just make sure it's sturdy enough to support the bottle without breaking.
Now it's time to fill the feeder. You can purchase a commercially made nectar solution. Or, you can easily make your own and save some money. One cup of sugar and four cups of water is all you need. You'll probably want to boil the mixture so that the sugar dissolves properly. Allow the sugarwater solution to cool, then pour into the feeder. Humming birds adore this simple recipe! Make sure you wash the bottle thoroughly between feedings. If you have a dishwasher, you can often use the top rack to easily and effectively wash the bottle.
One great way to encourage humming birds to come to your glass humming bird feeder is by planting clusters of bright flowers with trumpet shaped blooms. Good choices include Fuschia, Morning Glory, Butterfly Bush, Bee Balm, Red Columbine, Cardinal Flower, and Lily. All of these blooms provide lots of nectar and easy feeding for these magnificent little birds.
