An Easy Humming Bird Feeder Recipe

Is watching humming birds a delight and interest to you? Many people do. There are a wide variety of humming bird species, including the Magnificent, Broad-billed, Calliope, Costa's, Xantus, White-eared and Violet-crowned. However, when most people think of humming birds, they think of the gorgeous Ruby-throated variety. Ruby-throated humming birds have been immortalized in works of art and sculpture for ages, and it's easy to see why. With their stunning emerald feathers and ruby throats, these little birds are beloved the world over. If you want to bring these gorgeous humming birds to your yard, you'll need a feeder. Try the following humming bird feeder recipe to keep your birds happy.

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 cups water

Boil the mixture for a few minutes so the sugar dissolves. After the mixture cools, simply pour it into your feeder. You'll find that there are a variety of commercially made nectar solutions on the market, however they're really not necessary. Humming birds love the boost of energy they get from the pure white sugar, and it's perfectly healthy for them.

What may not be as healthy is adding red dye to the mix. Some people claim that adding red food coloring to their humming bird food mixture attracts the birds better. It's true that humming birds love the color red. But rather than risk harming them with coloring or dye, simply choose a red humming bird feeder. If you can't find a red humming bird feeder, just tie a red ribbon around whatever color feeder that you have to attract the birds. Humming bird feeders are bottle shaped and normally crafted from either glass or plastic. If you enjoy crafting, it's easy to make one of these feeders yourself.

Along with the simple humming bird feeder recipe listed above, you can bring hungry humming birds to your yard by planting certain types of flowers. When choosing flowers, go for bright colors like red, fuschia, orange, and purple. Also, look for trumpet-shaped blooms like those found on flowers like Morning Glory, Red Columbine, Butterfly Bush, and Bee Balm, to name a few. Be sure to care for your garden using organic measures only, because you don't want to harm your tiny winged guests with any toxic pesticides.
