Attracting Humming Birds with Humming Bird Feeders

There are a wide variety of humming bird species found all around the world. While the most recognizable species is probably the ruby-throated humming bird, there are many others. Buff-bellied, Berylline, Broad-tailed, Magnificent, Xantus, White-eared, and even Lucifer are names given to various humming bird species. If you're interested in attracting these beautiful little birds to your garden, there are two ways to do so: by planting certain flowers and hanging humming bird feeders.

Planting a humming bird friendly garden can be a great way to bring these birds to your yard. Humming birds have very little sense of smell. So the fragrance of the flowers you plant will make little to no difference in whether or not you attract humming birds. Go for trumpet-shaped vines, flowers and shrubs in bright colors. Some effective choices that humming birds love include: Bee Balm, Butterfly Bush, Red Columbine, Trumpet Vine, Hollyhock and Rose of Sharon -- to name a few. Humming birds are attracted to bright red and pink flowers that produce lots of nectar, so keep that in mind when choosing what to plant. You'll find that along with humming birds, butterflies will come to enjoy your garden as well. It's a good idea to care for the flowers and plants in your humming bird garden using organic pest control methods. Toxic pesticides could be harmful to humming birds and should be avoided.

After planting your garden, hang your humming bird feeders. You'll find a wide variety of plastic and glass feeders, ranging from the simple to the ornate. Some feeders are clear and very basic in looks and design, while others are beautifully hand painted works of art. Try a bright red humming bird feeder, because humming birds find the color red highly attractive. Fill your humming bird feeders with either a commercially made nectar solution or make your own. It's simple -- just combine one part plain granulated sugar with four parts water for a yummy sugar water solution that humming birds will love. Some people add red food coloring to their solution, especially if their feeder is clear. Whether or not you do this is up to you. I wouldn't recommend it, because the food coloring may not be good for the birds.

After you've planted all your bright, beautiful flowers and hung your humming bird feeders, all that's left to do is wait! When you sit near your garden to bird watch, have a camera handy. You just might capture on film the wonder and majesty that is the humming bird!
