Collecting Humming Bird Figurines and Art

Humming birds are astounding little birds that lend inspiration for many works of art. There are painting, drawings, and even humming bird figurines. Out of these, I'd have to say my favorite are the figurines. These delicate little statues are almost like having a humming bird captured mid-flight, right in your living room! While there are many different species of humming birds in the world, the species most commonly honored by artists is the Ruby-throated species. Most of the time, the males are the ones captured in figurine and painting form. This is because the males have the scarlet coloring at the throat area, while the females do not.

There's no wonder why humming birds are the stuff of inspiration. These tiny winged wonders are only around three inches in length when full-grown. They weigh only about one-eighth of an ounce. Their wings can beat up to 60 miles per hour, especially when they're escaping from something or diving.

Humming birds are similar to those other popular winged beauties -- butterflies. This is because both butterflies and humming birds feed on the nectar provided by many tubular shaped blooms. Planting bright flowers in colors like red and bright pink are a surefire way to bring humming birds to your garden. Examples of great flowers that humming birds like are Red Columbine, Fuschia, Morning Glory, Lily, Cardinal Flower, and any other blooms that are bright and trumpet shaped. This is because the humming birds feed by extracting nectar from the flower with their long, sharp beaks.

Another way to bring these birds to your garden is by hanging feeders near your flowers. Feeders can be store-bought, or you can make your own. A simple red glass bottle hung with crafting wire is all you need to bring the humming birds in. Why red? Because humming birds are highly attracted to the color red, of course! Fill your feeder with either a store-bought nectar solution or make your own using one part plain sugar to four parts water.

During your bird watching sessions, you will want to keep a camera nearby so you can snap some photos of birds when they come to eat. You just might end up with a great photo to frame and hang near your humming bird figurines!
