A Guide to Humming Bird Food
![]() |
Do you love humming birds? Many people do, and it's easy to see why! These amazing little birds astound with their miniscule size and lightning-fast wing beats. An average humming bird is only a few inches long, less than an ounce in weight, and can beat its wings as fast as 60 miles per hour when in dive or escape mode. While there are a wide variety of humming bird species, the most widely recognized is probably the ruby-throated variety. If you want to bring humming birds to your yard or garden, you'll need some humming bird food.
The most natural and beautiful way to attract and feed humming birds is by planting a humming bird garden. Humming bird gardens not only attract humming birds, but butterflies as well, because they both love nectar. When choosing flowers, plants and shrubs for your garden, look for red or bright pink colors and trumpet shapes. Red Columbine, Butterfly Bush, Morning Glory, Bee Balm, Rose of Sharon, Honeysuckle and Azalea are just a few examples of botanicals that humming birds adore. One word of advice: when repelling pests from your garden, use organic products and techniques. You don't want to harm the humming birds with toxic pesticides.
Along with your humming bird garden, a good way to provide sustenance to humming birds is with a humming bird feeder. Humming bird feeders are tube shaped bottles with tiny holes for dispensing nectar. They come in all colors of plastic and glass. You can find decorative painted ones, clear ones, and colored ones. If you can, choose a red feeder because humming birds find the color red highly attractive. You can fill the feeder with a store-bought nectar solution, or simply make your own by combining one cup sugar and four cups water. Humming birds love this mixture, and making it yourself can save you money! Be sure to thoroughly wash your feeder either in your dishwasher or with hot, soapy water each time you change the nectar solution.
So now you know the best way to attract and feed humming birds -- with bright, nectar-producing flowers and sweet humming bird food. The birds will appreciate the effort you've put in and thank you by coming to dine -- so enjoy the fleeting time spent watching your humming birds!
