A Guide to Humming Bird Species

There are many different kinds of humming bird species in the world. Humming birds are truly remarkable animals, miniscule in size with extremely fast wing beats. Read on to find out more about some of the most common types of humming bird species out there:

Ruby-throated: The ruby-throated humming bird is probably the most widely recognized species. They sport emerald green back plumage, and the males have the ruby coloring on the throat area. These humming birds are often found in the eastern part of North America in the warmer months.

Allen's: The Allen's humming bird lives in coastal areas. The males feature a shimmering bronze-green back plumage and a copper colored throat, and are smaller than the females.

Anna's: Anna's humming birds are commonly found in Southern California. The males have bright pink heads, dark green back plumage, and breasts that are gray in color.

Berylline: These birds are commonly found in Arizona and are primarily green in color. There is, however, some purple coloring on the wings and tail.

Broad-tailed: The broad-tailed species of humming bird feature plumage of green, gray and rose. These birds make a whistling sound that is similar to the sound made by crickets.

Calliope: This mountain dwelling humming bird features recognizable purple plumage that gives a whiskered effect. They also have green plumage on their backs and crown area.

Magnificent: The Magnificent humming bird is a little slower in flight than the other types of humming birds are. They feature emerald green feathers on their back and gorget, a black breast, and purple crown. They are found in a variety of southwestern states as well as Mexico.

Violet-crowned: These rare humming birds are found in Mexico and parts of Arizona. As their name suggests, they feature a beautiful violet crown. Their bellies are white, and their backs are emerald. These birds are quite aggressive in nature when it comes to frightening away competing humming birds.

Black-chinned: This type of humming bird is found in many different US states. The gorget is black with a violet band and white collar, and like many humming birds, the back feathers are a dark shade of green.

These represent only a few humming bird species in the world today. The humming bird is, and will continue to be, one of the most beloved birds found anywhere.
