How to Make a Humming Bird Feeder

Humming birds are some of the most popular and beloved types of birds in the world. Everything about these little birds is amazing. The average humming bird is only around three inches in length and weighs around an eighth of an ounce. Humming bird wings can beat as fast as 63 miles per hour, especially when they are diving or escaping from danger. Birdwatchers everywhere love spotting these beautiful little birds, and attract them in a variety of ways. One way to bring humming birds into your yard is with a feeder. While you can buy a ready-made feeder, it's often more economical and fun to make a humming bird feeder yourself.

To make a humming bird feeder, you will need some easily obtained, inexpensive materials. You will need:

  • Small to medium-sized red glass bottle
  • Crafting wire
  • Shepherd's hook (for hanging)
  • Hot glue

The reason you need a red bottle is because humming birds love the color red. If you cannot find a red bottle, a clear one will do. If you do use a clear bottle, fill it with store-bought nectar solution that's red, or tie a red ribbon around the feeder. The first thing you'll want to do is put a small beading of glue around the neck of the bottle. Then, wrap enough crafting wire around the neck until it is secured to the bottle, and leave enough to hang the wire from the hook. When you're ready to hang your feeder, simply wrap the wire securely around the hook.

To fill your feeder, you can use one of the store bought nectar solutions, or make your own. It's easy to do! All you'll need is one part sugar to four parts water. Humming birds of all kinds love this simple to make recipe, and it's certainly cheaper than the store bought stuff. You'll want to boil the solution for a few minutes so that the sugar will dissolve. When the mixture cools down, simply pour it into the bottle and hang it up.

The only thing left to do after you make a humming bird feeder and fill it is wait patiently. When you're hanging out by the feeder, have your camera ready. You just might capture a great photo of a humming bird that's come to dine!
